High School VEX Robotics Competition (Ages 14–17)

A Competitive Robotics Program by Boswin Robotics Mississauga

High School VEX Robotics Competition Program Overview

At Boswin Robotics Mississauga, our High School VEX Robotics Competition program is designed to prepare students ages 14–17 for the future of technology and engineering. By learning robotics programming, sensors, automation, and 3D design, teens will sharpen their computational thinking and team-based problem-solving skills—skills that are not only critical for STEM careers but also in everyday life.

This program offers students an opportunity to design, build, and code robots in preparation for one of the most prestigious high school robotics tournaments in the world: the VEX V5 Robotics Competition. Top-performing teams have the chance to qualify for provincial, national, and global competitions.

What Will Be Learned in This Program

  • Fundamentals of Robotics: Understand the core principles behind robotics, including mechanical design, motion systems, and hardware integration.
  • Programming & Automation: Learn how to program autonomous and driver-controlled robots using industry-relevant platforms and languages.
  • Game Strategy & Analysis: Master the rules and scoring strategies of the VEX High Stakes competition, including ring scoring, mobile goal placement, and robot climbing.
  • Collaboration & Project Management: Work as part of a team to assign roles, manage timelines, and achieve common goals effectively.
  • Engineering Design Process: Gain hands-on experience with the iterative design cycle—from brainstorming and prototyping to testing and refining.

Benefits of the Program

This isn’t just a robotics club—it’s a launchpad for teens to develop the leadership, innovation, and teamwork they need for future careers in engineering, programming, and automation.

  • Hands-On STEM Experience: Students gain real-world exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math through exciting, hands-on robotics challenges.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Through programming, sensor integration, and automation, students develop essential computational thinking and analytical skills.
  • Creativity & Innovation: Participants are encouraged to think creatively and innovate as they design and build competitive robots to meet evolving challenges.
  • Global Competition Opportunities: Participants have the chance to qualify for international competitions, including the VEX World Championship.

2025–26 Game: VEX Robotics Competition – High Stakes

  • Played on a 12’ x 12’ field with two alliances (Red and Blue), each made up of two teams.
  • Matches consist of a 15-second Autonomous Period and a 1:45 Driver Controlled Period.
  • Teams score points by placing Rings on Stakes, moving Mobile Goals, and climbing a central Ladder.
  • 48 Rings and 9 Stakes are positioned around the field; the Top Ring on each Stake is worth extra points.
  • Bonus points are awarded for winning the Autonomous Period and for completing specific tasks during that time.
